Fresh, local, aromatic. These are three words that are used to describe the basil we grow at Paradise Hill Farm. From seed to fully mature, this 6 week growing cycle is done using the same passion and care that have made our tomatoes loved by you since 2000. We are currently growing this basil year-round and have developed a custom LED lighting system with a full spectrum to mimic the sun. We use this lighting during the winter months to supplement the natural sunlight of Southern Alberta. We harvest our basil with the roots still attached so that you can maintain its freshness at home right up to the time when you use it in your favourite recipe or tomato salad!
Also available is our fresh cut basil. This is the same basil variety, quality, and freshness as our fresh basil plant, except without the roots and stems and in a convenient and ready to use package. Just like our fresh basil plants, the cut basil packages also should not be refrigerated.
Our basil is something you have to personally see and smell in order to fully understand how fresh it is. Check for availability at your local Calgary Co-op or come visit our farm store or either Hive location to experience the freshness and aroma of the basil for yourself!
Our basil package is recyclable as a PP or #5 depending where you are located. The root bag is required under the Canada Gap food safety regulations for packaging leafy greens (Basil). The root bag is PP also so again recyclable. The rockwool plug used to capture the roots and maintain shelf life and is best broken up a bit before going in the compost. After the roots compost the remainder of the block is then a great soil amender as it is just processed rock. As a note rockwool is recycled in Europe to make bricks for buildings after it’s used to grow many types of vegetables but this option is not yet available in Canada.
Our goal has always been to supply local product with as low environmental impact as possible while balancing this with a competitive cost to maintain a positive retail experience.
